As a man was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.
He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. “Well,” trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”
The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they remained stuck right where they were.
Well, like the elephants many of us are conditioned by the situations of life – our family, social, financial backgrounds, etc and cling onto a belief that we are not capable of achieving certain goals. All of us dream of becoming somebody or achieving something in life, but fail at it because we lack self-confidence, or it may be because we are afraid to try, simply because we failed at it at the first attempt. But in actuality nature has instilled immense possibilities within us. It is said that human beings use only 10 percent of the potential we are born with.
We all want to live to our full potential, but fail to do so because we do not realize the depth of energies within us. When it comes to working towards our dreams we are often confronted by doubts. The journey from ‘potential’ to ‘actualization’ requires realization and persuasive effort. Self realization should takeover self-doubt. Believe that you are good enough to do whatever you want in life. Life is too short for you to paralyze yourself with doubts. Your potential isn’t something you need develop; it’s something waiting to be discovered.
It is a fact that human beings are still under constant evolution, and there is constant scope to transform ourselves into better human beings. In each of us there is a huge volume of energy lying dormant, untapped, that if we become conscious or make the right effort, we could use this to make something incredible out of it. It is a treasure on which we are sitting.
In order to tap that hidden potentials within us we should make a conscious choice to pursue personal growth. The decision to change and grow is a powerful tool that can help us move forward. And, we need to set a goal to work toward, because we feel aimless when we don’t set a concrete goal. The next thing we need to do is to take conscious steps towards the goal, because action fights doubts. Once you set a realistic goal and show the courage to work towards it, you are on the road to success.
There is one more thing that we should keep in mind all the while: We are blessed with immense potential, however failure too is part and parcel of the journey towards success.
We should never give up the struggle in life.
